The true cost of developing an iPhone app

Streaming Colour developed and iPhone app called Dapple and it cost them 32k to make. Their sales are not even near the break-even mark despite the fact that Dapple has got stellar reviews and decent blog publicity including from Slashdot.

First there was a blog post about the sales data:

Dapple has sold 131 copies worldwide in the 24 days since it launched. I realise that I’m dealing with a very limited amount of data here, so I’m not going to pretend like I can make any kind of long term projections about how sales will be in a month, six months, or a year. However, what you can see is how far from my goal of 9,150 I remain. So…

That got posted to Slashdot and now there is a post about what happened after being on Slashdot.

Several people wrote Streaming Colour very angry emails to tell us that they were angry with us, or that they disagreed with our strategies or choices in game design. We’re very sorry that you feel that way. We hope that when Dapple Lite comes out that you will try it, and then you can make a decision for yourself about whether the game is worth your money or not. That’s really all we can ask.

I have no idea why people bother to send angry emails to random people on the internet and attack the developer for releasing sales info. Why is the internet so stupid and mean?
